Marla gets misty-eyed as Vikki presents her with a hand-made picture-collage depicting theirexperience together at camp this week. What a wonderful new friend!
Each group of campers alternates helping out preparing meals and with chores aroundthe spacious Griffith Lodge at the BOEC.

Vikki helps Sally, a BIAC volunteer from Australia, apply a sling and protective paddingto Marla's right arm, which received a new artificial elbow in April. The padding will offerprotection while Marla ascends the climbing wall!

Vikki leads the way as Marla works her way through the hanging vines. One-handed,Marla had to improvise a technique to transition from rope to rope. She would reachacross with her head to nudge the next rope into her left hand. Quite clever!

The whole rafting group takes a break for lunch while on the river. The BIAC camp wasdivided into three groups (or "tribes," if you prefer Survivor-speak) each of whichselected a name for itself. Marla's group called itself the "Sun-Baked Sardines."
Marla starts climbing the wall. Her first few holds were quite scary for her, butshe got the hang of things quickly. It is amazing that she can do this with only one arm!

Giggling after their success on the climbing wall, Marla and Vikki entertain the otherclimbers with their tunes on the Karaoke.
Each camper was paired with a buddy, their partner through the week's worth of adventure.Marla's buddy was Vikki Kusumoto, from New York. Vikki's brother Joe is a staff memberat the BOEC.
